Listening Info

This work is inspired by Wassily Kandinsky's Reciprocal Accords, pictured below. The work is a theme and variations, always returning to a central theme shared by the instruments. At many times, the instruments combine gesture to form singular textures and mixed, conjoined harmonies, as if colors are blending. At other times, the instruments take oppositional stances, creating strong contrasts; a balance of extremes embodied in Kandinsky's work.

Wassily Kandinsky’s Reciprocal Accords, illustrating John Aylward’s Reciprocal Accord, a theme‑and‑variations work where instrumental colors blend into unified textures or stand in bold contrast, echoing Kandinsky’s balance of harmony and opposition.
